Short Assignment #1

I think that I want to change the genre to advertise an elementary school. Since most public schools don’t really have advertisements, I would definitely be doing a private school with more of a K-12 approach. Most every school has a website, so using my knowledge I’ve learned from Wix I would create a website for the school, with a brochure, and multimedia presentation. Rather than my audience being prospective teachers, it would be parents looking for the right elementary school for their children. I would relay my research in a way of bragging what the school has to offer, and how educated the teachers are. I would do extra research on what types of schools are the good schools, and what types of things the best elementary schools offer. I Plan to have a CD made of current children songs that plays on the background of the website, and offer a free CD for every tour taken of the school. I am going to incorporate a poster board being a kind of in place tour showing pictures of the school and classrooms and I’m going to have small facts at the top of the pictures of the school. I think that this genre is the complete opposite from what my research paper was, however it will still include some of the information from my paper while still targeting a different audience. I also believe that it will grab the attention of most people, just because it’s a lot of multimedia and pictures.

Short Assignment #2

My audience would be targeting mostly parents of young children, but also young children. It’s important that the parents feel comfortable knowing their kids will like where they go to school, which is why it’s important to target both. My genre is going to be an educational approach along with a persuasive approach, kind of explaining what the school is and wanting the people on the tour or website to choose to send their kids there. I want to use the background noise of children’s music to show the schools interest in the students on the website, I want to use a brochure as a take home packet with all the information a parent would need to know, and I want to use the multimedia presentation as a kind of virtual tour with a poster board with pictures and facts as a way of showing the tour to the class.

Short Assignment #3

I mostly brought over my source I found on the teachers main duties, such as assessment and being able to interact and judge how the students are learning. I also added in what kind of credentials are expected and wanted from a parent when looking for a teacher and school. Other than that, I mostly used new sources seeing what kinds of attributes are wanted from parents when looking for a school. Such as, the gymnasium, football field, aftercare, and driving lessons. I also brought in what I would be looking for in a school. I think consistency is good. I would love for my future child to be able to stay in the same school for their whole adolescence and be offered many different after school activities and sports even as a kindergartner. In a way I changed the information in some of my sources, because rather than explaining what a student would need to go through and become in order to become an excellent teacher, I’m more of explaining what the school has to offer with its teachers. I’m using the information in a totally different way.

Short Assignment #4

My research essay and my composition project are entirely different. Although I used my knowledge of teachers and schools from my research project, I completely had to do different research and use my own opinions and thoughts for the composition. Being a “research project” I did not have that freedom until we started the composition. My audience went from being prospective teachers to being prospective students/parents. Completely opposite, however, I was still able to incorporate some of the same information. I went from telling students what their job would entail to telling parents what a school has to offer for them. The process with this project was fun. I was able to work freely, use my imagination, and create a website/brochure with an entire new school. It wasn’t hard, I didn’t have to do much research, and it didn’t take quite as long. I chose these genres because its generally what schools would use. Most private schools have websites, hand out brochures, and give tours. My genre went right with the audience. I was able to target parents as well as prospective students. I chose a CD because it’s easy to have as a give away and it’s a good reminder that we have the students’ wants and needs in mind. I chose the poster board because its an entertaining overview for the students to look at and for the parents to look at during down time before or after the tour, that also has vital information. The fact that there is a tuition decrease for students that start in kindergarten shows that the sooner they start, the better. The separate buildings show that the younger students are safe and wont have trouble getting lost or mixed in with the older students, and the aftercare shows that we offer more extracurriculars to students whose parents work later than we let out. Overall I enjoyed this project, I think it was way more fun than the research paper and I think it was a good way to utilize different kinds of materials and genres.

Statement of Goals and Choices

My project is made to attract people of all ages. I want parents to look at my website, and think; “Wow, this school would be perfect for my child.” I want their child to look at the website and think; “Wow, so pretty, I love this song!!!” My website is made to attract the eye of anyone, and the ear of the children. Although my school is k-12, we like to have them start as early as possible, which is why our approach is more targeted towards kindergarten students, and our tuition is offered at a lower price for those who start with us in kindergarten. For the “tour” I made a poster board, with lots of pictures and bright colors to attract the kids, but it also reiterates the information given on the website and the tour to attract the parents attention and make sure they really remember what we have to offer. The CD is a take home reminder that our main goal is the happiness and education of the children. We want you to feel safe knowing that your child is here with us every day, but also feel safe knowing that they’re learning and happy to be here. Because we’ve been arguing “Paper vs. Technology” I decided to use both in my presentation. I think that having the luxury of using both actually helps my project rather than just being limited to only one. I have a website, with a link to read the brochure, but we also give out printed ones on tour. I verbally would give the information on the tour; however, we have it on a poster board made with sharpies, glue sticks, and construction paper. Although, I printed out the pictures of the school and put them on the presentation board. I like to reiterate things until I’m certain the people I’m speaking to will remember them, and I think the use of both paper and technology helps accomplish that. Now, because I wanted to use a brochure, I was not able to list all of the information I wanted to while still adding color and pictures. Brochures are small, therefore limiting you to only put a certain amount of information. Brochures are usually used for mostly pictures and small bullet points, and after the fact I thought I may have been better off with a flyer, because it would be able to hold more information. However, the brochure was only used as a take-home or a link to print out while looking at the website, so it didn’t need to have all of the information, just enough to make you want to check out the website, or come in for a tour. The website really had no limitations. Wix offers many options, I just had to learn how to navigate. I was able to use a music button, a link button, pictures, information, footers, contact boxes, and more. I think doing the website was the best idea, because it really gave an overall look of the school, along with all of the information, and seemed pretty convincing to want to come in. Because I chose to do a tour, I can’t actually give a tour of a fake school, so that resulted in me choosing to do a poster board of a kind of paper tour, to show what you would learn and view if you were to take the tour. However, the poster board is a great thing to have when presenting to the class, so even though I can’t actually take anyone on the tour, they will know the amenities, look of the school, and what we have to offer. I think showing the poster board at the beginning of the tour before we leave is a good way to keep people entertained and a good way for them to see what we’ll be looking at on the tour. During this project, I was thinking of what I would want for my future child. I was thinking of what I would want the school to offer, what kind of programs they would have, and what kind of loyalty offers they have. I was thinking of what I would have liked to have as a kid, such as; lockers in the hallways, separate buildings, optional P.E. class, locker rooms, and uniform. Although my high school had most of those things, I would have liked to of had them earlier on as well. I know how parents are, especially when dropping off their kids on the first day of school, so I wanted them to know their kids were safe. Since I want to become a teacher, I know what kind of environment I would want to work at, so I also used that as I was creating the school. Also, I was thinking what kids would be interested in. I made the website with bright colors, and music playing in the background to grab their attention, I used 4 different colors on the poster board, so when were discussing boring details, they could entertain themselves. I made a take home CD, so that on the way home they could be entertained, while also showing the parents that were always thinking of the kids and pleasing the parents. Overall, I think I accomplished all my goals of this project. I think I went above and beyond the minimum requirements, and I believe that if this were a real school, it would be booming with people touring every day!

For Assignment #3, we changed the genre of our research paper and had to use new media sources and materials. I chose to use my information on teaching to change my genre into advertising a school. I chose to create a website, brochure, poster board, and CD.
